Week 5 Discussion Groups

This week in group discussions, you should be talking about the readings and the Rhetorical Context Analysis papers. This week will be a bit more fast-paced than how we approached the Concept Papers, since the Proposal is due by the end of the day, Sunday 2/12, but given the nature of this paper, it should all be manageable.

This week’s group tasks

  1. Discuss Rhetorical Context Analysis Prompt and Proposals
  2. Talk about the material

Discuss Rhetorical Context Analysis Prompt and Proposals

I want to encourage you to take some more time in your groups to talk about the Rhetorical Context Analysis Papers, your thoughts on the prompt, and where you might go with it.

This is a great opportunity to make sure you understand the prompt and to either discuss your topics or get some ideas as to what you might write about. Remember, the proposals are due by the end of the day Sunday, 2/12.

Talk about the Material

This week, we’re exploring the concept of metaphor. In your groups, I encourage you to talk about the readings and find connections, share your experiences with the concepts, and think through implications.

Here are also a few optional starter questions if you’re having trouble deciding on something to discuss in your groups or to talk about in the dialectical journals. Again, you don’t have to talk about these questions, so if you’d rather discuss something else about the course content, please do! I am listing these here just in case you would like some suggestions.

  • What are your thoughts on metaphor and its uses? Can you think of a specific time that you or someone else used metaphor when making a claim (either intentionally or unintentionally)? Was it successful? Why or why not? What effect did it have?
  • What do you think about the connection between metaphor and culture? How do metaphor and culture interact with and influence one another when it comes to meaning and significance?
  • How do you see memes working as metaphors? How are memes dependent on context for meaning? What do you think about memes in general? Do you have a favorite meme? (Also, feel free to use memes in the dialectical journal this week!)
